ATLAS LASTEN centers around inflexible positions that not only have a hard time, but can become a burden themselves in the maintenance of their roles and duties.

From the facade above the main entrance of the Bieberhaus, a hundred-year-old office building, two Atlas figures look out onto the station’s square in Hamburg. What is special about Atlas is that he does not move from the spot.  He remains committed to his task and supports the weight of the globe on his shoulders. Depending on the version of the narrative, he does this as a punishment or as a result of a trick in which the globe was to be handed to him just for a moment. For me, what is striking about the narrative is that it opens up the idea that there could be someone human-like at all who could provide stability globally and beyond. What follows is the belief that we would need this central balance and a strong person as global support.

The staircase offers the possibility to proceed in chapters.
A first quick overall impression is not possible. The views of the seven floors overlap in the atrium, but it is still not possible to survey the installation all at once. Floor by floor, elements repeat themselves, always clamped in different constellations. This includes what was already there before: the ornamental staircase, the tenants, the architecture of the paternoster with its traces of use and the old prohibition signs in and on the cubicles. In the pictograms, which are identical in terms of design, people with wheelchairs and loads are directed away from the area of the paternoster cabins. For (their) protection. An offer for an alternative is left out on them. The behavior regulation has priority.
As a barrier, the stainless steel nets further bargain the possibility of access. A safety net demonstrates the danger of depth or is it a challenge to a fictional jump?

The promised safety and stability, then, comes with restrictions and limitations. The paternoster inside the office building has been deactivated. Electronic elevators now replace the mechanical continuous run. Some of the loads have shifted to the immaterial and yet rebound on our bodies. While the load of Atlas once made up our entire globe, today office work is also associated with its travails. Tension in the Atlas spine, the uppermost of our seven neck spines, is a common result of prolonged office work and administrative activities. Similar to the former Atlas, which carries all its burdens on the shoulders, it is the monotony and stiffness that brings the malady. Inscribed in the work, we persist in the fulfillment of duty.

If there is nothing for weights to be weighted down, to hang from, they seem merely uselessly discarded. The departure from utility, however, opens up the possibility of alternative, narrative, and reflective uses. The cubicles are recoded as incubators and nutrient chambers. Atlas‘ loads are stuck between effort, overrepresentation, and immobility. My trepidation sticks to the beauty of the decor.
